Tool kit makes a great gift

They usually scrounge as much
furniture as possible from parents,
relatives and friends, but one thing
they never seem to have is tools. A
basic tool kit, therefore, would
make an ideal house-warming
present.

A basic tool kit consists of a
hammer, screwdrivers, a utility
knife, a hack saw, a putty knife. a
chisel, and adjustable wrench, vice
grips, pliers, a drill, a saw, a
measuring tape and a yard or
metrestick. With the exception of a
yardstick, these items can be con-
tained in a tool box.

«Hammer. A 16-ounce claw
hammer is best for all-around
general use. Some may prefer a
12-ounce claw hammer to hang
pictures.

* Screwdrivers. Screwdrivers are
available in complete sets that con-
tain a large and smali slot.a red
and green Robinson, and one or
two sizes of Phillips. For the
uninitiated, slots are for the regu-
lar type of screws, Robinson are
for the square or socket type and
Phillips are for the cross-head
type. This selection could handle
most types of screws found in the
average home.

¢ Utility Knife. This is the knife
with the familiar rounded handle
and the wedge-shaped changeable
blade. A must for cutting
curpeting, opening cartons, ctc.

®* Hack saw. Optional, handy
for cutting metal or pipe.

e Putty knife. For filling holes,
cracks or scraping wallpaper.

® Chisel. Again an option but
very handy on occasion.

¢ Adjustable wrench. A must in
every houschold. A mediuin size is
recommended for everyday usc.

* Vice Grips. Another must, this
versatile tool is helpful on many
jobs.

® Pliers. [wo pliers are recom-
mended. One should be @ stip-joint
plicr that can adapt to large or

small objects and the other should
be a pair of sidecutters that can cut
wire and grip flat material.

* Drill and Saw. Buy an inex-
pensive “-inch electric drill and
jigsaw that will serve well for fight
use,

© Measuring Tape. Buy a
measuring tape at least 10° feet
long. One with a locking device
makes single-handed = measuring
easier.

* Yard- or metrestick. Ht will be
used not only for measuring but
also for drawing straight lines be-
fore cutting.

This kit will make a unique and
welcome gift for the newly-moved
novice.
