Jeyaseelan takes UBC title

ELEVEN-yeur-old tennis ace Sonya Jeyuseelan of
North Vancouver won the under-I4 tennis champion-
ship at UBC recently.

At the B.C. Junior Indoor Winter Circuit ‘Tourna-
ment #1, the top-seeded Jeyaseclan defeated Sara
Zalbrod of Vancouver in straight sets 6-4, 6-4,

Jeyaseclan, ranked number seven in Canada in the
under-14 division, had a tough challenge from the
1986 Canadian under-12 champion Zolbrod, who won
that year’s championship in Toronto.

In the end, the consistent and aggressive baseline

player Jeyaseelan was too much tor Zolbrod to han-
dle.

In the same tournament, unseeded Jeyaseelan
reached the finals of the under-16 single event, only to
lose to one of the best juniors and the number four
player in Canada — Kim Frost of Vancouver — 6-4, 6

Next, Jeyaseelan will move on to play the United
States Tennis Association's Fiesta Ball in Phoenix,
Ariz., slated to start Dec. 27.

The best players across U.S.A. will meet for this
final encounter.
