W. VANCOUVER Tempers flare over race plans WEST VANCOUVER’S eighth annual Khatsahtano 15K Road Race will be going ahead as scheduled Nov. 16, but some runners are less than pleased with the arrangements, Permission was granted recently by West Vancouver Council, but not without considerable —hot- tempered debate. Founding organizer David Wong, supported by several run- ners, protested proposed route changes and a change in starting time from 8:15 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. ‘It is amazing to me that anyone would want to dabble with a successful event,’ submitted one North Shore runner, Ald. Diana Hutchinson inform- ed Wong that staff had already agreed to permit the use of last year’s Marine Drive route, even though a couple of the railway crossings could conflict with train schedules. The earlier starting time at Horseshoe Bay was selected to avoid conflict with the bus sched- ule and to allow members of West Vancouver Presbyterian Church to get to service on time. “But if our race is five minutes late, the bus will be at our back «it will really cramp our styte,’” Wong argued. By MAUR Contrunating Writer “S's not just one bus we have to worry about, The issue is whether you can start the race on time,” Hutchinson returned. Wong charged that the disizict had earlier banned the race and had not helped him put his sub- mission through. Wong submitted a report and recommendations concerning the race last February. Municipal staff asked him to address problems of traffic control and safety, supplying more infor- mation either in writing or in a meeting. Staff did not hear from Wong, and Wong did not come to the Oct. 9 discussion meeting at- tended by representatives from engineering, parks, recreation, local police and West Van Transit. “Tr feel we have bent over backwards to assist in this race. It we can improve on it next year, let’s get together earlier,’ sug- gested Hutchinson. That’s real estate sales in a nutshell.
