Passenger says thanks

Dear Editor:

The day: Tues., Nov. 26.
Time: 6:45 p.m. — 7 p.m.
Place: Lonsdale Quay.

One phrase to describe the
state of the weather outside
this noble edifice — ‘It
stinks!" Snow, slippery
conditions, driving
nightmares and miserable,
selfish humans who do
nothing to help the condition
in any way.

The scene — Lonsdale
Quay where many, many
people have been standing
waiting for a bus that seems
never 10 appear. For obvious
reasons the scheduled arrival
and departure of buses has
long since gone. It was also
very obvious that the long-
suffering bus drivers are do-
ing their best to cope.

Buses trickled into the
Quay, loaded and left.
Never, it seemed the bus
needed by most. Finally one
pulled into the right stop, a
few people got off. The
driver, obviously very tired,

to our horror, proceeded to
wind his destination sign
around to ‘“‘Third and St.
Davids*’ — the going home
sign.

We — the injured parties
in this deal, crowded around
the bus. The driver
apologised. He explained
that he'd finished his day's
work hours before and had
come back to help out some
more but — this particular
bus was finished and was
returning to the depot.

There’s one in every
crowd, they say. [In our
crowd our ‘‘character’’
pushed his way to the front
— demanding attention.
“P've been waiting here over
thirty minutes,"’ he com-
plained. This was the last
thing our tired bus driver
needed. The driver looked
pityingly at our ‘‘character’’.

As far as I'm concerned
the driver held himself in
check admirably. ‘'I,'’ said
the driver, ‘have been work-
ing since seven this morning.

stand there!"’

The driver slammed _ his
door and took off in a fury
thinking, no doubt, that
some humaas are just not
worth the effort.

I watched that bus take
off somewhat mollified.
There was someone out there
who'd not forgotten us.

From me anyway — thank
you, bus drivers. You did a
fine job in very trying cir-
cumstances.
