Stock up on a case of
Town House tinned tomatoes
(19 oz.) at Safeway for 69¢ a
un. If you use as many
tomatoes as ! do you'll
welcome the saving as well as
having them on hand.

Lean ground beef is just
$1.69 this week at Safeway.
Try combining the tomatoes
and the beef in one of my old
favorites:

Venezuelan Rice: Brown a
pound of ground beef (lean)
with a diced onion and a
green pepper.

Add: One 19-o0z. tin
tomatoes, 1 tin consomme
(undiluted), “% cup = sherry
wine, 2 teaspoons chih
powder, | cup white rice
(raw) and a cupful of sliced,
pitted black olives.

Bring to a boil and transfer
to a large, greased or sprayed

casserole dish. Cover and
bake at 375° for half an
hour. Uncover, top with a

cup of grated cheddar and
bake another 15 minutes.
This serves 6 generously.
Team it with garlic bread and
a dark-green salad, featuring
spinach or romaine.

IGA is featuring chicken
this week. Utility fryers are
fresh so you can stock your
freezer (99¢ a pound). If
you’ve got time, chop a few
up into parts. If not, drum-
sticks ($1.69) and_ thighs
($1.79) in approx. 3-Ib. bags,
already frozen might be a
better choice.

Libby’s Deep-Browned
beans, 14-oz. at 78¢ are
worth stock-up on, also at

September 17 at 7:30 p.m.
with a registration evening
and a= stimulating panel!

Information Age."’

The fall program will con-
tinue with speakers Dr
George Pedersen, president
of the University of British
Columbia, in October, and in
November, Mr. J.C. Shar-
ma, Consul General of India.
A special Christmas function
will be held in December.

Don’t miss the cauliflower
at Super Valu at 59¢ a pound
and the mushrooms at $1.98.
Instead of a salad, include
both in a raw relish tray with
a home-made dip. I mix
equal parts of real mayon-
naise and sour cream with a
hefty shake of garlic powder
and Italian Seasoning herbs.
Mayo and cream_ cheese
makes a nice combination
too, with garlic and season-
ing salt.

Boneless round steak is
featured this week at Buy
Low. Ever made ‘‘Mice’’?
Cut 5-inch squares of round
steak and pound the hell out
of them with the side of a
saucer or a meat mallet.
You’re going to stuff these
pieces with your choice of:
sliced green pepper, sliced
onion, lightly sauteed
mushrooms, black olives,
sliced white cheese, bread
stuffing or a combination. If
you like a Mexican flavor,
sprinkle with seasoning salt
and a touch chili or salsa.
Pizza flavor? Add a bit of
pepperoni, a couple of the
above vegies and season with
Italian herbs and_= gartic
powder.

Roll up into neat bundles. |

covered about 1% hours at
325°. Make sure they're
tender - you can’t really over-
bake these. You can thicken
the gravy a bit more if you
wish or add a few dollops of
sour cream.

is her long-time favorite. It’s

mind her too about the

pound to go along with the
cheese.

juice (12-48 oz. Uns) is a ter-
rific buy at Woodward’s. It
works out to under $1 a tin -
don’t miss it! Bananas, 25¢ a

Best food specials in a

HIS WEEK has some of the best food

Have I given you my recipe
for Bananas Foster? This is
delicious, quick to make and
very impressive for guests if
you prepare it in a chafing
dish or electric frypan at the
table.

For each serving, allow one
under-ripe banana, split in
half lengthwise, 1 tablespoon
butter, 1 tablespoon brown
sugar and two tablespoons
(who measures?) brandy or
liqueur. I’ve used cointreau,
Glayva, Triple Sec - whatever
we've got the most of. Melt
the butter and stir in the
sugar. Cook the bananas
gently in the mixture. When
they’re medium-soft, pour

the Hqueur over and stir it in- -

to the sauce:
vanilla ice cream.
Stong’s is featuring veal
this week. What do you do
with a veal shoulder roast
($1.48 a pound)? First you
cut the bone out of it and
flatten the meat to the best of
your ability. Lay about a 1”’
layer of bread stuffing over
the whole thing and rollup

Serve over

.. like a jelly roll. Tie with str-
«ing and brown in a Dutch

oven. Cover and cook like a
pot roast with a very little bit
of water in the pot - watch it!

You’ll want to allow. 3-4
hours for this, depending on
the size of the roast. Make
gravy with the’ drippings -
add water until you’ve got
about 2 cups. Marvellous
with oven-browned potatoes,
red cabbage and a _ hearty
winter vegetable such -.as
sprouts, turnips or squash.
