We kid ourselves when we
try to pretend that we are
perfectly rational beings. We
aren't. The person who
denies that he or she isn't
part-brute is just not paying
attention.

In this matter of the
Falklands, I'd be lying if I
didn’t say that my sym-
-pathies are entirely with the
British. I fervently hope they
knock the stuffings out of the
Argentine Navy.

I could try to couch this in
less aggressive terms, but the
truth is I would love to see
the fascist junta in Buenos
Aires given a_ thorough
military mauling. Not only
do they richly deserve it, but
the Brits are just the guys to
do it.

Well, having delivered
myself of these bloodthirsty
thoughts, I feel a bit em-
barrassed. It would be much
better to mutter some piety
about the path of Gandhian
non-violence.

But the truth is, I'm
probably a fairly typical
English-speaking Canadian
when I admit to. ex-
periencing bizarre urges to
see a war take place.

If nothing else, the
spectacle of an old-time
naval battle happening in the
nuclear age is a reminder
that war wasn't always a
matter of total apocalypse.

And in away, this
reminder makes me feel a bit
more in touch with human
history. It wasn't until my
generation that war became
mega-death. Until then, 1
was just a matter of soldiers
killing cach other

IT IS ASTONISHING how many people I talk to
who wanted to see war break out in the Falkland
Islands. I’m not entirely sure I'm not one of them.

At worst, there was the
msk of massacre, but Ar-
maggeddon was
unimaginable.

We've been living now
with the unimaginable for so
long that it is an exercise in
de-programming to see
something so antique as an
armada setting forth. Look

Ma, no fingers on the
nuclear trigger!
At least, not yet. And of

course part of the charm of
the Battle of The Falklands,
if such a term can be used, is
that it does not seem to
threaten the rest of us with
absolute destruction, even
though one of the world’s
nuclear superpowers is
involved. ;
If the conflict hadn't come
for another couple of years,
this wouldn't necessanly be
the case. By then, Argentina
will have nuclear capability.
I thought it was more than
slightly ironic that Ottawa
was careful not to tamper
with the deal whereby a

Candu reactor is nearing
completion in Argentina,
even though, otherwise,

Canada wanted tq show its
“absolute condemnation” of
the invasion of The
Falklands by a ban on im-
ports.

The Canadian reactor will

come on stream next
summer, providing the
military dictators that rule
Argentina with the
plutonium they require in
order to build nuclear
weapons.
