While the mayor's awa North Van District aldermen clash By PAT RICH DECORUM sank to a new low at the North Vancouver District council meeting Monday night as two aldermen engaged in a vicious verbal dispute concerning a coop housing development in which the pair live. In the absence of Mayor Don Bell, who has repeatedly told © council members to ‘clean up their act’, Alderman Ernie Crist and Gordon Rose accused each other of being liars and lacking dignity. The discussion began when a letter from two members of the Lynn Valley cooperative on Fromme Road was moved from the in-camera to the public section of the council meeting. In what has become a regular spht in councu, Alderman Crist and Mary Segal voted against putting the letter on the agenda. while Alderman Rose. Jim Ball and Peter Powell voted to discuss the item. Alderman John Lakes was acting mayor for the meeting. Repeated attempts by Segal to defér the matter, because she felt if was not something council should be discussing, were either voted down or rejected by Lakes. The letter contained allegations from two members of the coop. that Crist had said the mayor and council of North Vancouver District consider the 45-unit project to be a stum It also said Crist claimed some members of council had consistently opposed constructing low-income housing in the municipality. Crist countered with a signed statement from some members of the coop stating that he had never made the alleged statements. In turn, Rose produced what Crist said was a private letter from Cnst to another coop member which said one councii’ member voted against low-income cooperative housing because of the bad reputation of the Lynn Valley coop. Later in the meeting, Crist said Rose told him in a private discussion that he was “fed up” with low in- come, cooperative housing. “That's a replied. “You're a bounder and a liar.” lie.‘ Rose “So are you,” Crist replied. In another exchange, Rose asked Crist to deny the statements made in_ the ‘private’ letter. “It’s below my dignity,” said Crist. “What dignity?” Rose rebutted. Crist then said that at least he had “never fallen in arrears of my dues to the cooperative like Alderman Rose.” At’ this point Lakes in- tervened with: “That's a pretty cheap shot.” The entire argument boiled down to two points of view. On the one hand, almost all aldermen present denied that they had ever con- sistently opposed developing PRESSING AHEAD WITH BUILDING PLANS LGH gambles on go-ahead LIONS GATE Hospital will continue work on its ex- tended care unit expansion in spite of a delay in ob- taining design approval from the provincial government. But, on the other hand, Crist maintained there was strong opposition on council to such projects and this was why the mayor “consistently refused” to put the item on the agenda. He said the entire incident and debate “was obviously orchestrated to cause political embarassment to me.” Crist refused to give Powell a copy of the private letter and Powell requested a tape transcript of part of the debate. Ball commented “whose credibility! recognize.” The debate indicated once more the extreme discord that exists between some members of District council. Twice this summer, Mayor Don Bell chastised council members for their unacceptable conduct, which he said included using improper language and action “unbefitting” council members. on will amount to around $40,000.
