A7-Wednesday, September 3, 1986 - North Shore News mailbox Quebec ignores language rights Dear Editor: Re: David W. Martin’s let- ter (Aug. 17) advocating French for British Colum- bians. As a fluently bilingual individual raised in Quebec and living there for most of my life, I -emigrated to western Canada three years ago because our rights were being infringed upon. Let me give you some examples. : 1. Quebec is not a bilin- gual province, it is unil- ingual, allowing French alone to be spoken. This demonstrates itself in many ways. Overnight, any employees, regardless of how many years they have been with the company, had to learn French or be faced with the loss of their jobs. This is not an easy situation to face for a man of 55, who is looking forward to a com- fortable retirement. Could you learn another language at that age? 2. Children coming into the province from other parts of the country had to attend French schools. The French were afraid that their language would soon be ex- tinct and their culture as well, yet, they were doing to others exactly what they did not want to happen to their people, eliminating English from Quebec! 3. How many of our bright young nurses were forced to leave the province because suddenly the fact that they were excellent nurses did not count anymore. But if they could pass the exam in Fren- ch, they could practise medicine, how utterly ab- surd! This law applied to all young professionals about to enter the work force. Their knowledge and talent weze no longer criteria for becom- ing successful, but passing the French exam was. Suill pro-French, Mr. Martin? these young people have long since left Quebec. What future is there for them? 4. All company names had to be changed to French. No longer could a family business be known as “Jones’ Bakery”. It now had to be “La Boulangerie Jones.” 5. Promotions came to those, not who spoke Fren- ch, but who had a French name as well. The French were going all out to “get” ing was m French, I always counted many French among my friends; but when it came down to cold hard facts, I was not French, and that is what counted most of all. These are facts I have listed, there are many more I could tell you about. Many of us, lived with this crisis all the while wondering how the federal government could stand idly by and let this hap- pen. After all, we were Canadians; Quebec was the birthplace of our children, and yet, our rights were eras- ed suddenly before our very eyes. We left the place we loved so very much. Now three thousand miles away you think Pm going to speak French? Not on your life, I have seen and lived what can happen when one extends too many rights and privileges to a minority of the population, and Inspiring others to get more out of life Dear Editor: I have been teaching a variety of subjects in Night School Programs in Van- couver and North Van- couver for a number of years. These courses were what I would call the “how to” variety in teaching various skills to levels of competency for employment m a number of office capabilities. Of late, however, I have become interested in pro- moting what I term “inspirational” courses, the purpose of which is to in- spire others to get more out of their life experiences than they are currently obtaining. The course I specifically have in mind is entitled just that: “How To Get More Out Of Your Life Experience”. This course, for which I have developed an outline and “Lesson Pian”, will at- tempt to encourage and in- duce a participant to employ self-analysis in determing the status quo of his or her life experience to date. It will then, by means of a questionnaire, help the par- ticipant to explore his or her potential for getting the most out of his or her life ex- perience henceforth. GIANT CLEARANCE SALE!!! Quebecois are but a small minority of our population. All the immigrants are lumped into the “French fact” of Quebec, when they are, in fact, English, but the Quebec government counts them as being French. Let us be a nation, strong, and united, by one language, as that is the only thing that will unite us because we are such a myriad of languages and nations. Let us take an example from our neighbors, the Americans, no other na- tion has their pride and uni- ty. Let us be as wise as they are and end this nonsense.
