April is the time when our
anticipation for spring flow-
ers is at its. keenest.
However, I have seen some
pretty rough Aprils, so let’s

take into consideration what

the weather has to offer and
not really go by what the
calendar says. The = wise
gardener keeps an ‘‘eye’’ to

the weather and works with
it.

Transplanting time is
usually April for such dor-
mant stock as roses, trees,
and shrubs. It’s too early to
transplant outdoors those
vegetables and annuals
you've started indoors. But
you should visit your favorite
nursery to select trees and
shrubs you require to add
extra beauty to your home.

Nothing makes a_ house
more of a home than a shade
tree or two properly placed to
get the most shade around
your home. Trees to consider
would be birch and maples.
There is a most beautiful
maple which I favor often
overlooked by home owner:
the most beautiful ‘‘Three
Colored Tree’’, the ‘‘Shwed-
ler’’. It’s not really expensive
-- about $20.00 for a ten to
twelve foot specimen. In the
spring, as the foliage ap-

ears, it’s red, then as the
eaves mature, they turn
green, and finally in the fall,
a most beautiful golden color
~- so it’s my ‘Three Colored
Tree’’. . .

One point to keep in mind,
never plant any tree deeper
into prepared soil than the
tree growing in the nursery.
This is especially a rule to
follow if you are thinking of
planting a Mountain Ash.
You'll see the mark around
the tree trunk where it was
growing in the nursery, and
that’s as deep as it should be
when placed = on _ your

property.

Don’t let roots of trees,
shrubs. or roses dry out.
Place them in a bucket of
water and while you're at it,
add a tablespoon of Pink
Vigoro fertilizer so the roots
can absorb it and remove the
shock of transplanting. Then
what’s left in the bucket may
be poured around the plant
to give it a faster start. Plant
right -- dig a good deep h ole
and feed.

If lawns have not been
given their spring feeding,
better get this done. This
really is most beneficial to
the lawns good growth all
summer long. Do, please,
follow the directions on the
bag. It took a lot of research
to determine just how much
of the product you should
