Stolen bike retumed same day

A bicycle stolen in North
Vancouver was recovered in
West’ Vancouver and
returned to its owner the
same day, due to prompt
action on the part of the
owner and officials, and the
fact the bicycle was marked
as part of Neighbourhood
Watch.

A West Vancouver Police
spokesman says the incident
demonstrates the ef-
fectiveness of the Neigh-
bourhood Watch program,
and the value of reporting
stolen goods quickly.

The spokesman said the

bicycle was stolen cast of-

Capilano Road,
Van, last week

in North

The owner reported the
theft to the RCMP who fed
the number of the stolen
bike into a computer.

Later the same day, West

Van by-law officers
recovered the bike at
Hollyburn school, entered

the number on the bike, and
matched it with the number
of the stolen vehicle.

Neighbourhood Watch is a
program whereby owners
mark their possessions with a
unique number registered to
them.

Difficult to control, official says

A bear strolled across one

North Vancouver woman’s... smell the nice aroma and

lawn, Friday, and another
North Van woman reported
her cat was killed by a
coyote on the weekend,
indications that the wildlife
is once more coming out of
the woods for the summer.

And while the regional
supervisor for the depart-
ment of fish and wildlife,
says his department is doing-
everything it can to control
the problem, Bert Wilson
Says owners have a
responsiblity to look after
their pets.

Wilson said it is the time
of year when bears come out
of hibernation.

‘In North Vancouver they

come down to where they
spent last summer.’

‘We are concerned with
safety,’ Wilson said, ‘and will
make an honest attempt to
control the problem.’

_ But, he said, people have
a responsiblity to look after
their own children.

It is the same with pets,

Wilson said.

‘Coyotes are notorious for

‘picking up house cats and.

small dogs,’ he said, ‘and it is
difficult to control that
(coyote) population over
there (on the North Shore).

They are hard to trap or
shoot, he said, and added
that shooting one will not
solve what he describes as ‘a
never ending problem’.

‘Coyotes_can life in back
yards,’ he said, and said that
coyotes live in North >
Vancouver year round, and
there are probably more
reports now about people's
pets being eaten because
more owners are letting their
pets, outside.

‘Owners have an
obligation to look after their
_pets, * Wilson says.

Burning bag sends firemen

to Lions Gate Hospital

North Vancouver City and
District fire fighters as well
as the RCMP were called to
Lions Gate Hospital,
Saturday evening, as a
smoldering plastic bag in the
incinerator room prompted
a call for assistance.

A North Van City Fire’

Department spokesman said
a call was received at 9:24
p-m., and fire fighters: went
to LGH where they quickly
extinquished the fire.

‘There was some smoke
noticeable on the third and
fifth floors,’ the spokesman
said, ‘but you could mainly

* just smell it.’

He said no damage was
suffered by the hospital.
