Seen, 16 - Sunday, August 28, 1988 ~ Lyan Valley Echo Argyle singer receives music scholarship ARGYLE STUDENT Aviva Lacterman was the winner of a scholarship that allowed her to spend a week at Shawnigan Lake this summer pursuing her future career: opera singing. Lacterman was one of three B.C. people who attended the July 24-31 Summer Music Holiday Camp under full scholarship of the West Coast Amateur Musicians Society. “She did a super job ... she also helped a lot at the camp,”’ noted Ruth Downs, executive secretary of the society. It was a busy week for Lacter- man — each day a musical instru- ment was employed to awaken campers at 7 a.m. Breakfast was followed by choir and a course in 20th century music. A rhythm course and one hour of free time took up the afternoons. Evenings were spent in rehearsals and concerts. One challenge Lacterman rose to was learning enough Polish to master the soprano sold in a new work by Polish composer Henryk Gorecki. According to Downs, Lacterman turned to her Polish- speaking grandmother, and the two of them worked on the lyrics. Inspired by her mother, who was in the Vancouver Opera, Lacter- man first entered the Vancouver Opera children’s chorus when she was nine years old. She spent several years with the chorus, and has taken private lessons for eight years. She cur- rently studies with West Van- couver’s Nona Mari. Instead, Lacterman will be focusing her efforts on learning some 20th century operatic works. “1 jike to do new works that no one knows and make them better known.”’ After graduating from Argyle, Lacterman will be looking for a university with a good music pro- gram. Right now, she’s thinking about the University of Toronto or Indiana. Following a degree, she hopes to one day study at Juilliard. “I've got a big ambitious streak in me right now,” she laughs, but tempers her enthusiasm about new musical endeavors with caution: ‘'1 don’t want to do something when I’m too young and make a fool of myself.”” Locals will be able to hear Lacterman at Argyle’s fail concert, where she will be singing the soprano solo in the third move- ment of Crystal Earth, a new composition by Argyle teacher Lloyd Burritt.
