A parting morth shore news —__— MAIL 5 question for an NDP advisor . Dear Editor: Ah, ves — David Schreck resigns his position as “special advisor to the premier (Aug. 29 North Shore News). Not a bad truffle to have rooted up at the old trough ~— 3 fancy title and 92-grand- a-year to beot. It would be tough to walk away from that gravy train bur it is reassuring to see he still has ‘his integrity. Pm relieved to hear thar Mr. Schreck has been “inun- dated with job offerings.” At NV famil ramiy poisoning Dear Editor: During the past Labour Day long weekend, at the top of Lonsdale and’ Rockland Road, an inhuman person deliberately poisoned our fami- ly cat. You know who you arc, luckily we do not. You will no doubt be pleased to know that she suf- fered a great deal of pain and, for a proud lady, was embar- - - rassed to be dependent on us. - Our family found her crying, on.our doorstep; we held her, least he wont go hungry or have to go on the dole. David, we wish you well in your new endeavours, but one final question as vou might know the answer. That Adrian Dix fellow — the one whose job you assumed after he yor canned — just what date was that infamous “July 17, 1997" memo really written? Cmon David, I bet you kn ww. . May God have mercy on your soul and when your time comes to pass over may the cats meet you with claws bared. The Browns North Vancouver OX Get with the St ear Editor: daa the Sept. 8 letter to the News editor from North Vancouver City Counciilor Stella Jo Dean. Don’t our paid represen- aatives have better things to do with their time and our moncy? Wake up and smell the rail end of the "90s! The comment that “graf- fiti is morally wrong” is just plain propaganda to me. What morals do these kids not have? The same morals that our ancestors must not have had when they painted on the walls of caves? “Graffiti intimidates,” whom does it intimidate? This isn’t Police Academy the motion picture where thugs spray-paint pen- sioners. It is also nor South Central L.A. where gang members “tag” their gang turf. It is suburban North Vancouver where talented artists are given no outlets for their passions just like all other teens. Parents do you know where your kids are? Probably not drinking in ACCOUNTING SERVICES Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly a park or hanging around somewhere ... not your kid, right? They're our doing one of the many “morally right options provided for them by the thoroughly modern city council.” The title of the article should have been “Help get rid of old-fashioned unrealis- tic council member.” If getting rid of graffiti is costing us taxpayers big, big vacks as the councillor puts it, why not take a proactive approach? Rent or sell space to the artists. What does the councillor think fining or even jailing these kids is going to teach them? They will probably learn what all other criminals learn in our correctional facilities ... learn how to not get caught next time! These artists ace doing it for the love of their culture. What culture asks the councillor? Why Hip Hop of course, The people that love, sup- port and identify with this culture do so because of - break-dancing, DJing and grafting. Fining them is not going to break or diminish this love, if anything it will strengthen it because a fine for them will be “paying their dues” literally. These kids first and fore- Most are artists. A lot of them = are extremely talented, and should not be thought of as criminals. To fine a property owner for having “unsightly graffi- ti? is not going to improve any relationships between adults and teens. Why not focus your abvi- ous passion of making changes to our system to benefit all aspects of society not just those who wished thar bobby soxers were still the rage and that children should be seen and nor heard? Just remember that those children will be heard when they vote!
