4 — Sunday, October 9, 1988 - West Vancouver Villager New soccer coach has high hopes for team NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD Patrick O'Shaughnessy, a gradu- ate of Sutherland Secondary and a student at Langara Col- lege, has hopes of leading the West Vancouver Secondary School soccer team to the B.C. championships. As the team’s newest coach, O’Shaughnessy had stated one of his goals was to be West Van's first coach in 23 years to take the soccer (eam across the water to play a game. And that goal was recently reached when the West Van team played agaainst Vancouver's Windermere Secondary. Although the team was defeated, O'Shaughnessy said he achieved what he was striving for: ‘‘It broke down any egos my players may have had and it turned a group of players into 2 team."* For O'Shaughnessy this is not his first attempt at coaching soc- cer. He spent his summer working with Graham Adams at Ambleside, SFU and. Jericho Beach, teaching the basic fun- damentals of the sport to children ages three and over. When it’ comes to coaching, O'Shaughnessy says he has no strict technique, except that he wishes to be friends with his players. He motivates them by tell- ing them what they can be and 18 players for his team, and cut- ting 22, O'Shaughnessy decided to pick younger players and develop a team that would do well for the next few years. This, he said, would inevitably make coaching the West Van team an easier task for the next coach who comes along. O*Shaughnessy himself started as a goal keeper at the age of four and since then has been active with teams such as Grandview, Lynn Valley Falcons, Frontenac High in Kingston, Capilano College, HKG, UBC Old Boys, Langara College, Columbus Italia and Westminster College in Utah (NCAA). As far-as professional ' soccer goes, O'Shaughnessy has been on the Vancouver 86’ers reserve team and -the Seattle Storm under-18 allstars. Of the 18 players on his team, the majority are 15 and 16 years old. Much of O’Shaughnessy’s ef- forts are concentrated on Eddie Patrola, the team’s goalie, who asked his coach to teach him everything he knows. Other key players for West Van are Kirk Campbell, Darren Diligenti and Simon Tate. However, according to O’Shaughnessy, teaching the group of West Van students the essence of teamwork is more important than producing a few star players.
