If you happened to be walking by Room 321] on a Monday afternoon recently, you might have heard Linton Garner on the piano or some other professional jazz artist, say, Lance Harrison on the sax. Invited as guests of Eldercollege, some Vancouver's best-known javn plavers have — entertained Eldercollege members in the course entitled Syncapation, Scintillation and All Thar Jass. The program, a hit, is organized by avid jazz fan, Eldercollege member and for- mer North Vancouver District mayor Murray Dykeman. “Pve always been a listen- er,” says Dvkeman. “In the fate 1940s in Vancouver, I was fortunate to go to concerts by George Schearing, Sarah Vaughan and Billy Eckstein.” Inspired by the jazz course he took last) vear at Eldercollege, Dykeman has made every effort since to attend concerts and jazz festi- vals around Vancouver. When Dr. Gerald Hodge (a found- ing member and subsequent president of the Vancouver New Jazz Society) was unable to facilitate this year's jazz course, it seemed natural for Dykeman so volunteer. “Fhad no idea who T was going to bring in as a speak- er.” faughs Dykeman. “But every time | started ralking to people abour it, 1 had a great response from the musicians who wanted to talk to people interested in jazz.” A Capilano College jazz graduate yave the first two lectures on the history of jazz. He didp’r actually meet Harrison until the Chilliwack Jazz Festival last May. That’s when he talked to him about Eldercollege and found out that Harrison was very keen to talk about jazz. Harrison, who is in his late 70s, first got his Musicians Union card in 1936. Jazz artist Linton Garner probably got his a little soon- er, .When he visited Eidercollege recently, Garner told an amazed crowd that he would soon be 83 and still plavs piano five nights a week at Rossini’s Pasta Palazco on Vancouver’s West — Side. Dykeman met Garner at Rossini’s, told him about the jazz course and invited him to speak, telling Garner that peo- ple. would be interested to hear his life story. And they were. Garner talked about his professional life and a litte about what it was like ro grow up in Pittsburgh in the midst of other talented musicians (he is the older brother of the Errol Garner}. Garner took piano lessuns for only ovo years before switch- ing to trumpet, which he later played professionally for decades. : He says he aad Errol were close bur he was glad he switched to trumpet at the time because with a brother like Errol, there wasn’t roori for ovo piano players called Garner. “I had no grandiose ideas of being a star. 1 just wanted to be competent,” says Pharmacist CAPSULE COMMENTs | Apri is Cancer month.
