OUT OF about 1,100 stu-
dents, how many do you
think wear a baseball hat?
Perhaps 700 or 800? Well,
there is a possibility that it
may not matter.

“Why?” you may ask.

It’s because of a possible ban
on baseball hats at Carson Graham
secondary school.

So what's next, schoo} uni-
forms? Who knows!

For the past three or four years
there have been a number of dis-
cussions concerning baseball caps
being “appropriate attire” in
school. The most recent talks
began late last spring, with parent
advisory committees, parents of
students, some staff and the gener-
al community.

Now, why would someone want
to ban baseball hats? Well, in pre-
vious years it was because of cer-
tain hats being gang related.
Though now, as i understand it,
it’s to do with “common respect.”

In an interview with my princi-
pal, Mr. Dairon, he informed me
that there are already several
schools, though none in North
Van., that have a No Hats policy.

Dairon also told me that in
regards to Carson Graham, there
are no “official talks” at this time.
What does this actually mean? 1’
not particularly sure.

How could they make it work?

After talks with parents, staff and
administration, there would be a
school policy passed, but I’m not
sure how long it would take.
Although to be honest, I’m not
quite sure how the school would
get several hundred students to not
wear hats.

But what about the religious
groups in school who wear certain
head gear? Could this possibly
minimize the diversity that Carson
is famous for? These groups would
definitely have to be considered.

I decided to ask some of my
fellow students what they thought
about this and received such
responses as:

“tf think its a bit ridiculous and
all hats are not gang related”;

© “I don’t wear a hat, so I don’t
really care” and

“tf think it's just stupid that
they'd even think about it.”

I also asked some teachers what
they thought about this idea:
CI “1 don't really care if my stu-
dents come in their underwear, as
long as they show up. Although if
it's gang related, | completely
agree” and
Q “1 think that baseball caps are
disruptive because I can’t even see
my kids’ faces.”

Though the banning of hats
may not come to pass, | believe
that people dress how they choose
and if you take that option away,
our school becomes more of a pri-
vate institution. In my opinion that
just wouldn’t be right.
