NEWS graphic Robyn Brown 1992. | Thirty-one of the 33 fire deaths or 94% occurred in residential fires. There was no smoke alarm installed in in the homes where five of the fire fatalities occurred. One death resulted from a smoke alarm being installed in an unsuitable location. in the case of four of the fatalities, smoke alarm function could not be determined. Even though the number of fires and deaths are gradually decreas- ing, the people of B.C, could do much, much better. We must realize that our homes are where the majority (94%) of fire deaths occur. We must guard our families against the ravages of Miele, en fire by ensuring smoke alarms are installed and functioning. We must plan and practise home fire drills with the entire family. We must push for stronger building codes, regulations, and bylaws to mandate residential sprinklers in new buildings. Fire departments should also become more proactive and place a considerable amount of effort in public education. A number of studies have proven that for each dollar invested in public education programs, $20 was saved in antici- pated property losses, medical expenses, and carning losses. Fire departments have programs to help teach you how to protect your family from fire and life- threatening injuries. Next time your children brings home fire safety activities from school, please take the time to get involved and assist them in these life saving opportunities. For further information on how you can protect yourself and your family from fire, contact the District of North Vancouver Fire Services’ non-emergency number, 980-7575, or contact your local fire department.
