Red Cross ‘sends call for donors LEN LIFCHUS, director of blood donor recruitment, for. the Red Cross, is asking people to give thanks for. their. health this Thanksgiving by giving the gift of life, a blood donation. _ We have a serious shortfall in our blood collections,” said Lif- chus, : Lifchus said that only 35% of the Canadian population is actu- ‘ally healthy enough to qualify to give blood. However, only 4.5% .of Canadians are regular blood ' donors. ; ' To-be a blood donor you must be in good health and between the ages.of 17 and 71. Donors over 66 years. of age must have given blood within the last two years. You should also not be on any medication; however, there are a few exceptions. It is advisabie for -donors-to have a substantial meal _ within four hours of coming to the clinic and to allow an hour for the donation process. - ~ Donors are asked to bring their blood donor card. First time donors need to provide identifica- tion. The average person has between 4,500 and 5,400 mL (10 to 12 pints) of blood in his or her body. The Red Cross needs only 450 mL (one pint), which is quickly replaced by the body with no ill effects. The permanent centre for donating blood on the North Shore is located at 4750 Oak St., North Vancouver.
