His death is the focus of a cor- oner’s inquest this week, “. The police say they had no prior knowledge that Kelly Possee would be in the Burnaby basement suite when they executed their drug raid. The North Shore News, which had been negotiating with the North Veacouver RCMP for two weeks to go along on a drug raid, was at the scene when the arrests were made. By Sur] Rattan News Reporter AT 7:30 p.m. ‘Tuesday night, four North Vancouver RCMP drug squad members and one West Vancouver drug squad officer gather in the back parking lot of the North Vancouver RCMP detachment. They are planning a raid on a Burnaby basement suite at 4679 Canada Way. Their target on this night is 24-year-old North Van- couver resident Robert Vesty. Based on information gathered from an informant and a two- weck surveillance stint, the police believe they will find a significant quantity of drugs in the Burnaby residence. On this night, the police are looking for cocaine as well as a marijuana growing operation. Two of the police officers in- volved in this drug raid, RCMP Const. Sylvain Leroux and RCMP Const. John McDougall, were also involved in a drug raid last year in North Vancouver. On that outing, 22-year-old Daniel Possee, of North Vancouver, was fatally shot by a West Vancouver Police drug squad officer. Leroux, dressed in street clothes, is driving an old beat-up van. He will attempt to make the drug buy and drives towards the Westview Drive area to meet with one of two suspects. The suspect Leroux meets with will call a second suspect to in- form him that he knows someone who is interested in buying 3.5 grams of cocaine. The second suspect is at the Burnaby basement suite. The rest of the officers involved in the raid head east along the Upper Levels Highway towards Canada Way in Burnaby. At 8:04 p.m., the drug squad members, who are all driving un- marked cars, pull into the rear parking lot of a commercial build- ing at Canada Way near Will- ingdon Avenue. They wait for Leroux to arrive undercover officer,’ says West Vancouver drug squad member Const. Trevor James as he waits in the parking lot. Leroux arrives and tells the team that he. is waiting for a phone call.
