The Table of Honor was a unique competition for ceramic and glass artists of B.C. 10 design and execute dinnerware and goblets for Government House, of dinnerware before presentation to Government House. @#ee One of the many exciting events of this past week was the gala re-opening of the Pacific Palisades Hotel, which had been purchased by the Shangrila Internationa! Hotels and Resorts chain some 18 months ago. [cis now an all-suite hotel, transformed beautifully by an $8 million interior facelift by Robert Ledingham & Company. Tkere’s also the hotel's newly- opened Monteray Lounge and Grill where executive chef, Anne Milne, wields a mean spatula. She has just returned from a recent three-week trip through the kitch- ens of the Shangrila chain with an eclectic, flaverful menu. The restaurant seats 80 and the lounge area holds 68. The en- trance to the restaurant has wrought-iron gates, an atrium ceiling and hand-woven jeweled- ioned carpets of deep green and burgundy from Thailand. The talented singer-pianist- composer Almeta Speaks returned to our town from Toronto to be the special guest performer for the hotel opening and to entertain in Monteray’s for the next two months. And you wouldn’t believe the bouquets of roses that con- tinue to arrive every day for her... Tuesday night the gala black-tie dinner at Ruy Paes-Braga’s Four Seasons Hotel was a tremendous success for Team Vancouver and a tribute to the five leading chefs — John Carlo Fellicelia of the Westin Bayshore, Wolfgang Leske from Delta Pacific, Stephen Kraft of the Empress Hotel in Victoria, Bernard Weber from Memories on Thurlow and N.V.’s Wolfgang von Wieser of the Four Seasons. They put together an amazing seven-course gourmet dinner in- cluding West Coast salmon, pheasant consomme and loin of lamb. The monies raised will allow the chefs to compete in the National Restaurant Association’s 2!st Cu- iinary Arts Salon in Chicago next month... eee Master magician David Copper- field will be in Vancouver on April 16 and 17 for two shows a night at 5:30 and 8:30 p.m., and it just might be that he'll be in- troduced by CKNW’s top broad- caster and off-times magician Rick Honey. The other whispers I hear are that Rick has been pitched heavily and handsomely by Winnipeg radio station, CJOB, to take over the important morning show which has been hosted by the leg- endary personality, Rex Alex. It’s a great honor to be asked to follow in such footsteps and Rick was quite delighted. But he and his family have roots here on the North Shore and he’s happy with his thriving career and lifestyle. .
