used professionally

The current Canadian system
broadcasts pictures composed of
525 scanning lines per frame in a
width-to-height ratio of four to
three, or roughly the shape of the
average movie screen in the late
1940s

The proposed ATV formats will
roughly double the number of
scanning lines to between 1,050
and 1,125 lines, and offer screens
that fit today’s movies.

Because each proposed system
must deliver more information to
the home TV, setting a transmis-
sion standard poses a unique
challenge. The Canadian broadcast
system is based on the alotment of
a certain amount of airspace — a
band — for each channel.

Although this system is ideal for
delivering black-and-white and
color programs, ATV demands
that as much as twice the amount
of information be fitted into ex-
isting channels or be delivered by
other means.

Far from being a dream, howev-
er, ATV is already here and in

professional use. Several rock
videos and a recently released
movie, Julia and Julia, were shot
entirely on tape, not 35mm film.
Also in the works is a major mini-
series, produced by the CBC,

Paving the way for ATV, Friel
believes, are three recent video in-
novations that resulted in marked-
ly improved picture and sound
quality. MTS stereo hi-fi sound
added a new dimension to home
entertainment through full, lifelike
stereo sound.

Additionally, a new generation

of high-resolution VCRs, such as |

Super VHS and ED Beta, have
brought dramatic improvements to
videotape picture quality.

Finally, several manufacturers
recently unveiled enhanced resolu-
tion TVs that reproduce high-
resolution videotape pictures with
stunning clarity.
