& - Friday, March '1, omosexuality not on Dear Editor: It's embarrassing to appear to be agrecing with Doug Collins (given his somewhat extreme views on homosexuality). But [ wish to offer an alternative viewpoint to the re- cent Highlands United Church let- ter on sodomy. Their letter to the editor (Jan. 33) stated that there was no link between Sodom and sodomy (i.c. homosexual practice). Such an Original suggestion was invented by D.S. Bailey in 1956, and has been used ever since by virtually every pro-homoscxual apologist. The Bible passage in question (Genesis Chapter 19:1-29) is no isolated, one-shot reference to sodomy. Even the pro-gay United Presbyterian Report (which was defeated) had to admit that there were 14 Biblical texts and 225 biblical verses referring to homosexuality. ‘Pro-gay advocate Arvid) Arvell admitted that ‘a reading of these scriptural materi- als can only lead to the conclusion 1088 - North Shore News that both the Old Testament and the New Testament emphatically oppose homosexual practice."' The consistent historic Christian position on this passage is that homosexual rape was the clear in- tent of the men of Sodam. If we can be convinced that the men of Sodom were simply being un- sociable in their riotous behavior outside of Lot’s house and that God subsequently destroyed Sodom because of their sin of “inhospitality,"’ then we can be convinced of anything! Even the rejected Pro-gay United Presbyter- ian Report (U.S.A.) nated that “few reputable scholars would agree with such a hospitality inter- pretation.” This is not to argue that homosexuality was the only sin in Sodom. Far from it. That would be like saying that widespread homosexual practice is the only sin in the West End. The well- respected Presbyterian theologian Dr. Richard Lovelace reasons that EXTREME VIEWS SLAMMED Wative land claims can no fonger be ignored Dear Editor: This letter is in response to your article of Feb. 7 in the North Shore News, entitled Municipalities Ner- vous over Indian Act Amendment. As reported, this particular amendment will permit _ Indian bands across Canada to tax land they have leased to non-Indians. I would first of all like to ap- plaud Mayor Lanskail of. West Vancouver for his statement that ‘Gt is no longer possible to treat Indian people. as. an. inferior jurisdiction. ‘They. are our equal.” . Canada needs .more politicians . ‘who. think like this man. ~The other extreme is- George Horwood, director of finances of © West Vancouver. It is people with ‘ his mentality and stereotyped: opi- nion of natives that contribute to holding us right where we are on the societal level — at the bottom. .. Horwood predicts ‘‘some_bit- “ terness over. the. issue,’’ and: he ‘calls the amendment ‘altruistic, : but ‘tremendously naive.””. The dic- tionary defines altruism:-as. an unselfish concern for the welfare of others. : Unfortunately, the non-natives have never been altruistic towards “our” plight. The natives were altruistic towards the Europeans who first set foot on our land — we helped you. and showed you survival skills. It has been said rhat _ weclost our'land not because we "were naive but because of our kindness. “Horwood goes on to predict that the leased lands could develop into a squalor or a slum, which goes back to a previous statement I made about his stereotyped think- ing of all natives. Horwood fears the municipality would Jose out in such an ar- rangement. What about. what we have lost? It would be interesting to ‘know. how many billions of dollars have been taken out of In- dian ‘country by government and private enterprises. What percent- age of Canada’s wealth has been spent on the first landowners of this country —~ not much! There .is again a* cutback "in post-secondary education funding which is another plan of the two governments-to:hold .us just. where. 400,475. es we are, and to prevent any prog- ress toward self-government. On one hand, people protest our so-called handouts and, on the other, are denying us any hope of ever improving our situation. We are a product of your ancestral manipulation and cruel mistakes. We can no longer be ignored and treated as a problem that will . hopefully go away. Our ancestors were not only stripped of their lands but of their pride, dignity and confidence. My generation must accomplish. the miracle of " regaining all this but only with the cooperation of others. Can this be so terrible or im- possible to accomplish? I don’t think so.
