Blues
win
Challenge
Cup

THE CAPILANO College men’s
soccer Blues opened their 1987
season with an overall win in the
Pacific Coast Challenge Cup.

Played over the weekend at
Nanaimo’s Malaspina College, the
tournament featured four
Washington State and four B.C.
college soccer teams.

The Blues went undefeated
throughout the tournament and
did not give tp a goal in the com-
petition.

In the opening round, the Blues
defeated Washington's Green
River Community College 6-0, The
Capilano College team went on to
blank Cariboo College from
Kamloops 2-0, and Washington’s
Pearce Community College 2-0 to
finish first overall in their pool.

{In the cup’s final game, the
Blues beat BCIT 2-0.

Blues goal scorers were Robert
Reed and Mike Smith, both 18 and
both centre forwards.

The Blues cup victory was the
first by a Canadian team in the
competition.

The team’s first home game in
the B.C, College Athletic Associa-
tion league will be Friday against
Trinity Western University.

Kick-off time is 4 p.m.

Locals chosen
for team

TWO NORTH Shore residents
were among seven players from
Alberta and B.C. named to the
Pacific Region under-17 hockey
team.

West Vancouver’s Mark Kauf-
mann and North Vancouver's
Robert Tadey will join the team,
which will participate in the Esso
Cup being held later this year in
Quebec.

The tournament will feature five
Canadian regional teams and five
national under-17 teams from
Europe.

The two North Shore players
qualified for the team after atten-
ding the Pacific Region training
camp held Aug. 13 to 19 in
Calgary.
