suit a better lay-out, but in some
cases it’s best to start from scratch.

Because it is the largest surface
in the room, choosing the right
flooring color and pattern is of key
importance,

The quantity of direct sunlight
in the kitchen affects the choice of
color in the room. In northern ex-
posures, designers suggest warm
colors in the yellow and red
shades; they suggest cool blues and
greens in Southern exposures.

According to designers, light
colors and small patterns visuasly
expand the space in a small room.
Dark colors and overscaled pat-
terns will make a-large room seem
warm and cozy.

Don't be afraid of a bold pat-
tern in a small space — it can ac-

tually make the space seem larger.

To select a flooring pattern, the
designers note that the cabinets
and appliances form a geometric
design. On the floor, grid and
trellis patterns organize space, as
do evenly repeating block or
square motifs. Diagonal fines add
the illusion of more space.

Always consider each element in
concert with all of the others. Once
you’ve decided on the basics, per-
sonalize with collections, plants
and flowers.
