8 - Sunday, May 24, 1987 - North Shure News Mailbox Preserve the ferry building OPEN LETTER TO BILL IRWIN, PRESIDENT, AMBLESIDE VILLAGE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION As a long-time resident of West Vancouver, ] was very surprised at your remarks published in the North Shore News regarding the preservation of the ferry building at the foot of 14th Street in West Vancouver. First of all, if you would check with the planning department and the heritage inventory, you would find that this building is listed as a prime building for preservation. Secondly, if you check, you: wil? find there is money available from the provincial government for res- toration of such listed buildings. As you well know it was this very building more than any other, due to its function, that was responsible for the development of the Municipality of West Van- couver from a summer cottage enclave to Canada’s wealthiest bedroom community. It has never been suggested the building is an architectural gem, although it has a design reminis- cent of the work of Samuel Mc- Clare, a foremost architect of the © time. However, it is the most significant historic building as referred to above. No building whatever it’s condi- tion is too far gone for restoration. More Mailbox I could cite many examples of this as any preservationist can, i.e. St. Paul’s Church in North Van- couver. It may not be brick or stone, as in the east, but our histo- ry was built of wood and can be preserved. There is no argument anymore. Most communities know the value of preserving their history in buildings — that makes them unique. This building will have a positive focus for the’ Ambleside Village Plan now being developed, either as a teahouse or museum. It is this sort of public use which will bring the public to your area, because of its unique amenities. Jack Watts Chairman North Shore Heritage Committee DR. GABRIEL J. MULLER AND DR. SHELLEY L.
