THE NORTH Shore Sportsman’s Summer Soccer League's (NSSSSL) regular season wound up recently with the Olympic Hotel victorious. The Olympic squad amassed a record of cight wins and one loss over the season. Sergio’s Oyster Bar, McBozo Vikings and the Sons of Norway finished second, third and fourth respectively with only one point separating each team. Deep Cove Silver finished fifth followed by the Rusty Gull, Baco Construction, Burrard Dry Dock, Coach House United, and the St. Alice Hotel, The 10-team NSSSSL has been operating for three years. Following a wild round of NSSSSL play-off action, Rusty Gull and Coach House United bat- ued their way to the league final July 27. The Gulls blanked their Coach House rivals 4-0 in the final. The league will be holding its invitational tournament Aug. 10 and 17 at Hamilton and Grand Boulevard Parks. MARATHON MAN Hugh Clifford gets hearty congratulations from Tony Lawrence at a surprise party for Clifford. West Vancouver's best known runner turned 80 in mid-July. since retiring. His best time in the 26-mile, 385 yard event is 4:01:21. He plans to compete again in October. Rams butt Argos THE NORTH Shore Argos Foot- ball club opened its 1986 cam- paign with a 25-18 exhibition toss to the Surrey Rams at B.C. Place Stadium on July 19, The Argos took advantage of the exhibition game to build bench strength and fine tune their attack. The Argos earned an J1-] half- time lead on a 38-yard touchdown pass from veteran quarterback Rob Lervold to receiver Tony Vandertcelie. and four points from sophomore kicker Scott Lesage. North Shore started the second half by playing all its rookies Surrey stayed with their -eterans and prevailed. Bright spots for the Avgos in- cluded a spectacular ‘2-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Vanderleelie. Lervold was seven for cight on passing for 134 yards while runn- ing backs Korm Treiu and Shawn “Wiggles'’ Willington provided a solid ground game. The Argo defense turned in a down stroug performance, highlighted by a second-quarter interception by Shane O'Sullivan. The Argo special teams were led by Scott Lesage with a 40.5-yvard average on eight punts. “The entire league is fur more competetive this year,’” com- mented couch RJ. Parry. ‘But we are really looking forward to the season ahead.”’ The Argos open regular season play with a game against the Van- couver Meralomas on Aug. HQ) at Connaught Park. Two days prior to the game the Argos are sponsoring their annual rookie night. Besides giving the players a chance to get to know each other. the night is intended to get any in- terested new players to come out and learn more about the club and its facilities. Soccer Association (BCSA) will hold a basic senior referee's clinic for aspiring soc- cer referees Sept. 12-14, at the BCSA offices at 6255 McKay Avenue in Burnaby. Successful completion of the clinic will qualify participants as interim class three soccer referees. Also, those who qualify from the course will be eligible to register with the B.C.
