Mailbox Bouquet for the Socreds Dear Editor: Here we go again. No sooner does a provincial election loom on the horizon, when the NDP goes into its predictable knee-jerk reac- tion and activates its muck rake manure piles out of mole hills. Now the socialists are flogging that dred old chestnut “conflict of interest."" Pretty soon a cabinet minister in charge of water resources won't even be able to invest money in a new toilet bowl, because it uses water controlled by his ministry, ergo, conflict of interest. The conflict of interest that has infinitely graver consequences for our children is the teacher-school! board member one. Rather than investing a few bucks, certain B.C. teachers are running — and getting elected — to schoo! boards where they actu- ally take part in decision making regarding teachers’ salaries. Their own salaries. But does the NDP utter one word about that? Not on your life. Especially if they are NDPers. Most British Columbians think it is far more productive to throw a few bouquets rather than heave brickbats. And congratulations are very much in order for Grace McCar- thy, Premier Bennett, Bill Vander Zalm, Jack Davis and the Social Credit government for having the vision and foresight in forging ahead, in the face of constant and derisive criticism, to give B.C.’s Lower Mainland one of the finest, automated, technologically ad- vanced rapid transit systems — the SkyTrain — in the world. Reconsid For the determiniation and te- navity, in the face of leftist: crit cism, in bringing Expo 86 ts our province and Vaneouser. Ao great world’s fair that will enhance Canada, British Columbia and Vancouver immeasurably. bringing millions of visitors, millions of dollars and future investments, and world renown personalities and publicity to our scenic shores. Spectacular Canada Place — it would not have been a reality had it not been for the tireless and dedicated efforts of Grace McCar- thy and others to proceed with determination and zeal towards its ultimate and beautiful fruition on the old CPR Pier B.C. The great new Annacis Island suspension bridge nearing comple- tion is also due for an overdue bouquet. It also received its share of neza- tive publicity, as does Northeast Coal, and the recent dreary deri- sion heaped upon its current pro- blems of reduced coal exports to Japan due to a lengthy recession, but problems that will be resolved when the economy gets back on track again. In the meantime all these great and worthwhile projects, if nothing else, have generated many thousands of jobs which would not have existed otherwise, and our economy would have been in far greater difficulty than it was. The NDP should take a good look at itself in the mirror, whereupon it wouldn’t be so ar- rogant and puffed up with self- righteousness. L.W. Meyers Vancouver der District outdoor burning ban Dear Editor: Another open letter to Mayor Baker. In banning outdoor burning, I believe the district is doing a disservice to the few responsible gardeners who prefer to dispose of trimmings and diseased plants in this manner. With a dry kindling base, branches from shrubs and trees can be transformed into beneficial ash quickly with a minimum of smoke. Forced to bundle all waste material can only result in increased sanita- tion costs and an over-flowing dump, not to mention the extra labor in- volved in cutting, bundling and tying. In view of the fact our numbers are few, | hope you will reconsider this decision. B.
