SE aa travel- by Barbara McCreadie if, as 1 do, you live close to a passport oftice, applying in person is much quicker, Your passport will be ready for pick-up in three or four working days. Another advantage is that you can have any errors corrected on the spot. If you mail your applica- tion, the only office that will ac- cept it is Ottawa, meaning that you're at the mercy of Canada Post for what might be a long time. If it must be returned for correction, the delay might axe your travel plans. A copy of your birth certificate must be presented with the ap- plication. If you bring the docu- ments to the office, the certificate is checked and returned to you. Since my daughter's friend works every weekday and the Passport Canada office is only open 9-5, Monday to Friday, we volunieered to do the delivery for him. FOUR PHOTOS We picked up an application at the nearest post office and he took time on Saturday to have his four pictures taken (two needed to go with the application, two extras are spares in case needed for visas or International Driving Permits). Then we sat down and carefully filled in the blanks. Brian signed the forms and pictures as ‘*guaran- e ° : Manuel Mendoza invites you tu see his new spring line of se,arates. GUARANTOR A guarantor is limited to a list of professions such as doctor, lawyer, school principal etc. and Brian, as aC.A. qualifies. So, there we were, waiting in line at the passport office clutching the envelope with form, pictures and bivih certificate, certain that all was accurate. Wrong. Your alleged travel ex- pert (me?) goofed. ‘‘And this is Geoffrey?”’ the lady at the desk asked, holding up the pictures. “Pity he didn't sign the front of his pictures so we'd know far sure." But, luckily, Passports Canada isn't as rigid as some other gov- ernment bureaucracies. COMMON OVERSIGHT “Don't worry. If he comes in person to pick up his passport he can do it then. It happens all the time." We gratefully paid the $21, took our receipt and went home with egg on our faces. *“*# Passports are fun. They assure the world that you really are someone going places.
