A8 - Wednesday, August 29, 1984 - North Shore News How big was the ‘Holocaust’? a book, and I will read it. Tell me that I may ‘ki: ME THAT I AM FORBIDDEN to read not order a book through the mails, and I will get on my horse and fetch it myself. In short, no one’s going to govern what I read. That’s why I’ve obtained ‘*The Hoax of the Twentieth Century,’” a book by an American professor — A.R. Butz — in which it is claimed that the holocaust was a hoax, that the Nazis did not kill 6,000,000 Jews, and that it is Zionist influence and propaganda that keep this story alive. That’s what the man says. Whether he’s right I can’t say. Nor can you. It would take an international inquiry to determine the truth. But he spent years working on the book and although you could pick holes in it (one being that he is a bit too eager to prove his thesis), the volume is packed with persuasive detail. ~ -He puts the real number of Jewish deaths in Nazi- controlled Europe at about 300,000, in itself terrible enough but roughly in line with an International Red Cross report on concentra- tion camps fatalities. There were crematoria in many of the camps, he admits, but these were to cater for the high mortality rates resulting from typhus and other diseases. His view, supported by morbid calculations, is that it would have been im- possible for the available crematoria to get rid of millions of bodies. And the gas chambers are ‘‘a myth.’’ The League for Human Rights of B’nai_ B’rith Canada pressured Ottawa to get this by Doug Collins ban Hoax, and in June it was announced that the Customs Branch had complied. The book cannot legally be brought into this country, and it is also illegal to mail it. The action was taken by An- dre Lachance, a civil servant who said the book was con- sidered to be immoral and anti-Semitic. So now we have an Ottawa bureaucrat and yet another ‘‘human rights’’ bunch deciding what our tender minds can take. I don’t consider the book to be immoral or anti- Semitic. But it is heretical, and while you can't now be burned at the stake - for uttering a heresy, you risk in this instance being denounc- ed as a devil, and possibly as a neo-Nazi. You may also end up in court on ‘‘hate’’ charges. So much for freedom of speech in the True North Strong and Free. And don’t expect any help from your politicians, who grovel for votes from all pressure groups. Having seen the Nazi regime at close quarters, and assisted in the ‘‘denazifica- uion’’ process after the war, I need no instruction from B’nai Brith or anybody else on what it was like. Hitler was a homicidal maniac who didn’t stop short at murder- ing his own henchmen, let alone others. There is also no doubt that slaughters took place in the occupied ter- ritories, not only of Jews but of Czechs, French, Poles, Russians, Yugoslavs, etc. But the issue here is whether the Nazis had a plan to murder every Jew they could get their hands on, and whether ] mailbox DX Make WV nuke-free Dear Editor: Word of West Vancouver council’s decision not to have the municipality a nu- clear-free zone has certainly reached the Soviet Union, with the result that probably right now Russian ICBMs are being re-targeted to Dundarave, Ambleside and even the British Properties. FIRESIDE HEATING to the original stories, says the author, most authorities now admit that the camps in Germany proper were not ‘‘death factories’’ as such, the orthodox view now being that they were all located in what today is Russian- controlied territory. The dreadful scenes at Bergen-Belsen (which |! witnessed) were, he says, the result of end-of-war chaos. Fireside Heating would like you fo meet the top 2 candidates for the 1984/85 heating season. The late Paul Rassinier, a French resistance man and himself a concentra- tion camp prisoner, wrote several books denying it. There have been others. But the main issue, to my mind, is not whether they and Butz are right or wrong, but that witch-hunts and book bann- ings are as bad now as ever they were.
