But for the relatively new organization he belongs to, the B.C. Boardsailing Club, it’s only the beginning. Operating for the past seven months, the boardsail- ing club boasts 140 members province-wide and also has the disinction of being the first Canadian boardsailing club to field a competitive team. The B.C. team roster is an impressive one. Damilano, 29, who recently placed 10th at the Olympic trials held in Quebec, has represented Canada at the past three World Championships and, in addition to several other awards, also picked up the B.C. and Western Canadian Championships from 1981 to 1983. Richard Myerscough, 18, places sixth at the recent Olympic trials, and was the top Canadian at the 1983 World Windsurfing Cham- pionships, finishing fourth. He also won in his weight class in the B.C. Champion- ships every year from 1979 to 1983 and has taken the Western Canadian Cham- pionships in his weight class since 1979. Heather Stewart, 24, recently finished second at the Canadian Women’s Na- tional trials and will go to Scotland in September to compete in the World Women’s Championships Jacqueline Brown, 17, 15 currently gearing up for the qualifying round of the Windsurfer ‘‘demo sport’’ Olympics in Seattle If she qualifies in the demonstra tion sport she will travel to Los Angeles to compete in the finals As a demo sport, PUZZLED??? The board sailors qualify- ing for the 1984 Olympics will be using Windglider boards, which offer more buoyancy and flotation, and allow both males and females of all weights to compete in the same class. Winsurfer competitions, on Windsurfer boads, require separate weight classes. Damilano says the club is now in the process of drum- ming up membership and is also looking for volunteers to help out with admistration. He says club members cur- rently range in age from !4 to over 60: ‘‘Some of the older people are out sailing every- day. It’s not a hard sport. You only need six hours of class time to pick it up. And all kinds of people do it — everyone from executives to people out of work.’’ He says local races are held SECTION SPORTS BUSINESS REAL ESTATE regularly at Jericho Beach for people at all levels who are interested in competitive board sailing or dinghy rac- ing. He adds equipment can be rented at most beaches. For those who want to pur- chase their own equipment, Damilano says prices of boards and equipment vary from $500 to $2000, depen- ding on how serious a person is about the sport. ‘*That’s the purpose of the club and the team. With an organization, we can get sponsors to help with some of the costs,’’ he says. Additional funding of the club is also derived from membership dues and grants from the federal and provin- cial governments, the latter resulting from recognition of board sailing as an Olympic sport. Damilano says the club would like to build a broad recreational base, as well as a strong competitive core. For either discipline, however, he Says it is necessary to possess a certain level of physical strength, basic sailing knowledge, plus an understanding of the sport’s rules, strategies and tactics.
