Dear Editor: ; I would like to thank all the citizens who spoke up against the proposal of the Recreation Commission to install a liquor lounge in the North Vancouver Recrea- tion Centre, at the public meeting held on December 10. I would like to thank, in particular, Mr.. W. Mayo, for voicing so aptly my hus-_ band’s and my thoughts on the very real issues involved. Once a public lounge is in- stalled, there will be no turn- ing point. The profit factor will override any social ills that will ensue — ills left to a the ultimate discovery, if this generation will be lucky, of some historian or researcher bent on an in-depth study — but only after irreparable damage has been done. We are all human. Many of us like a social drink in a congenial atmosphere. But a public tounge is a public lounge. Why expose our country’s most precious resource, our.own children, to the hazards, even if only occasional, of the irresponsi- ble off-the-street drunk, or the brutality of a drunken brawl? There are plenty of social liquor outlets in North Van- couver. Let’s prove that we are adults by exercising a lit- tle self-discipline. Members of the Recrea- tion Commission, for their part, can prove Organizational mettle by coming up with a viably, sober and more compatible means of making a profit. As for the residents over-: -° reacting, by his remark of - “girlie shows”, Mr. Jim Ball clearly showed that not only * was he the one who ‘was ovérreacting, he was also. very much out of line.
