“If the tees are on the road
and by high-voltage wires, B.C.
Hydro won't ask people to trim
the trees because there's a real
safety hazard there,’’ Wilson says.

He adds that B.C. Hydro will
drive through neighborhoods to
target trees that must be trimmed
or removed. But not everyone is
receptive to the idea of having a
tree removed.

““If people will not remove the
tree, then they’re given a letter
Saying they have been notified
that the trees are a hazard to the
lines and if anything happens and
they fall down, they'll be liable,’’
says Wilson.

“*A lot of people were not very
cooperative in the past about
removing trees, especially on the
North Shore. The trimming just
doesn’t cut it.””

Wilson says people are now
starting to become more coopera-
tive about having trees removed
and that the Tree People will send
out notification cards informing
homeowners they will be in the
area trimming and removing trees
for B.C. Hydro.

people to save trees, Wilson says

and more, It hasn't hurt us, put it
that way and we're are not

in someone’s yard, we don’t want
to go in and take it out.

“We'd like to maintain it.
We're not into this business to
just take out trees."’

In fact, says Wilson, he
becomes upset with construction
firms who tear out trees when

building houses. He adds that
there is no reason for having to
take trees out.

“The cities have asked them
(contractors) to maintain these
trees for greenbelts and bound-
aries. But contractors just come in
and push all the dirt up against
the trees and kill them.

“That’s their way of getting
around it. | think a company like
ours should be notified ahead of
time and we can go in and make
some suggestions and help these
construction people out,’ says
Wilson.

The Tree People and Davey
Tree take their work seriously and
try to give their employees the
best training possible. Davey Tree
operates a tree college in Kent,
Ohio which offers a month-long
course to its foremen and other
employees of the Tree People.

Wilson says the college consists
of five acres with research facili-
lies.

“They (Davey Tree} also come
up here and give seminars to our
pecple on maintaining trees and
spraying. We can take a leaf out
of a plant up here, put it in a
package, send it down to Ohio
and they’ll come back and tell us
what kind of tree it is, what the
problem with it is, how to cure it,
when to spray and what chemicals
to use,’’ says Wilson.
