Bob Mackin: News Reporter THIS summer’s weather has been so disap- pointing, one could only wish Sarah McLachlan had staged all 40 Lilith Fair shows here. There were no clouds in the sky and some \ actually went home with sunburn afier the third annual tion of women in music began July 8 at Thunderbird Stadium. “The gods and goddesses smiled upon us and gave us our one day of sun,” MeLachlan joked as the sun set behind the stage at her first concert in nine The day commenced what may be the final Lilith Fair tour. McLachlan hatched the idea four years ago in a reaction both to concert promoters who claimed no one would buy tickets to a show with more than onc female performer and radio program- mers who wouldn’t play songs by women back-to-back. She proved them wrong with four multi-act concerts in the summer of 1996, including one at Nat Bailey Stadium, before going all out the n Lilith Fair quickly became a marketing phenomenon, spawn- ing three live compilation CDs, a TV special and even a cook- book co-written by McLachlan and tour chef Jaime Laurita. Corporate sponsors have jumped on the bandwagon in a big way. But McLachlan says it’s time to take a break. After an Aug. 31 show in Edmonton, Lilith Fair will be no more. Or will it? : “I don’t want to close the deor on it, it might happen in five or 10 years, I'm just not sure,” she said at a pre-show news con- ference. “Life changes a lot and things are unexpected — you never know what happens.” McLachlan and her business partners at Nettwerk Productions want some time off. McLachlan and husband/drummer Ashwin Sood bought a house in West Vancouver last year and intend to start a family. Lilith Fair was only a three-year commitment, she said. But even if it doesn’t return, the name and concept aren’t for sale. “I wouldn’r sell it because for me I’m a control freak and a perfectionist, and my business partners are as well. I think it would be really hard for me and them to let what we've worked so hard on for the past three years go to somebody else and not have the same control over the integrity of it. It would be really difficult to let that go. But I do hope that someone else picks up the momentum to this and brings something new to the table.” SARAH McLachian keep- ing her options open on the future cf Lifith. The end of Lilith, whether temporary or permanent, may be necessary from a busin standpoint. McLachlan can’t risk over- exposure. Her 1997 Surfacing album has run its course, and live albums without new material, like McLachlan’s just-released Mirrorball, generally don’t have long-term staying power.
