Meanwhile North Vancouver MP Ted White has been leading his own crusade against the wivializa- tion of youth erime. He is considering using the case of the rampaging North Vancouver vouths as an example. “One of the things I had investigated was a way of making the names of voung offenders public after they had been convicted,” said White from his Ottawa office on Wednesday. He said he has received legal advice stating that as Jong as he does so within the context of the business of the house, he is legally able to name young offenders within the House of Commons. Any MP who dogs so would be protected by member privi- lege as would any resultant reports of the discussion by the media. However, White said it is a parliamentary con- vention to avoid discussing matters still before the courts. As a result, not only would he wait for the current trial’s conclusion, but also its window of appeal — a period that could stretch to a number of years.
