IMAGINE that every second of the day, you’re being watched - by people who want you dead. Who are these people? Well, the FBI, CIA, MIB and any other form of gov- ernment intelligence with funky initials. Why do they want you dead? -;, Because you run a little newsletter with a handful of ‘subscribers. Yeah right, like you’re really a threat to the country .. OF are you? ‘In Robert Donner’s. The Conspiracy Theory, Mel Gibson stars as the paranoid Jerry Fletcher, a cab driver who writes a newsletter with his theories on hidden con- spiracies plaguing the gov- -ernment. - . The film leads us to believe that Fletcher’s inter- est in lawyer Alice Suttor (played by Julia Roberts) is a double-sided coin — she is his only real link to the press and she just happens to look pretty good in a short skirt with pumps. Gibson’s beliefs keep him on his toes, and justifiably so; he’s got the sadistic Dr. Jonas (Patrick Stewart) of the CIA on his tail, watch- ing every move. If Fletcher so much as goes to the little boy’s room, surely a camera will be waiting in the roilet. The great thing about The Conspiracy Theory is that while it’s by no means a low-budget independent (with the price tags of two A-list actors in Gibson and Roberts approaching the eight-digit range), the film is powered by a deep script and Osear-calibre perfor- mances. No exploding cruise ships necessary in this one. Gibson’s performance is something of magic. There is something about him that brings across an amazing sense of character and charisma into every role, even some Joe Blow taxi dri- ver. But by the same token, there is also a down-to-earth quality thar he exudes; a tough task, considering he was People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” Take nothing away from Julia Roberts or Patrick Stewart though. Robert’s portrayal of the sexy Sutton’s innocence was refreshing and convincing, and as far as Captain Picard, he’s come a long way since the days of, “Aye, number one.” The Conspiracy Theory is a mystifyingly mysterious mas- terpiece that I would hon- estly recommend to any and all moviegoers.
