broadcaster passes away IN DEATH, as well as in life during his long career in radio sports, Bill Good Sr. proved he could command a big audi- ence. By Jim News Columnist rearney A packed house tomorrow stu ing at 1 p.m. at West Vancouver United Church, 2062 Esquimalt Ave., will say a final farewell to the big affable guy who, for so many years, was the nation’s preeminent curling and golf broadcaster. A West Van resident from almost the diy he arrived here from Winnipeg shortly after the Second World War ended, Bill was 77 when the bronchial problems that plagued him from the day he was born in Wilkie, Saskatchewan, ended his life at the Beacon Hill lodge last Tue: It's one of life's ironies that he became a national broadcasting personality with his annual pla by-play broadcasts on CBC radio of the Canadian curling champi- onships in the days when the event was sponsored by the Macdonald Tobacco Company. ~ Among his perks was a constant supply of the sponsor's cigarettes. which certainly didn’t help his probiem. He gave up smoking 15 years ago and became a low-key crusader against tobacco. He wasn’t a broadcaster all his working Jife. He started out as a sports writer with the Regina Leader-Post, moved to Winnipeg and the Tribune and then to Vancouver and the Province, where he wrote golf and curling and became assistant sports editor when Erwin Swangard was running the sports department. There came an economy wave day when Erwin was ardered to cut one reporter from his staff. He con- sulted wath Bull. As each name came up. Bill would say things [i fou can't tet him go. His wite’s expecting a buby in a few days. or“... We can't do that to him. He's getting married next w And so it went until Swangard said: “We there's only one guy left... and it's you. There ended Bill's newspaper career. In no time he became Vancouver's first truly suecessful freelance sports broadcaster, The bulk of his work was for the CBC. Not only in curling and golf though. He broadcast the swim- ming and diving events from the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, the 1968 Games in Mexico City and the 1966 and 1970 Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, and in Edinburgh. A deadpan practical joker, he casually informed a young home- town reporter at the 1967 Pan- American Games in Winnipeg he'd just learned that the Games’ 50- metre pool was a tenth of an inch shorter than the listed length. As a result, if there were any record times, they wouldn't count. Just as the reporter was about to go on the with this exclu: Good confessed to the hoax and saved Phil Reimer, now the CBC-TV weatherman here, cons erable embarrassment. He spent a working lifetime making his job a lot of fun and making friends with almost every- one he ever met. He leaves his wife, Doris, and two sons.
