GOLF TIPS Setting a realistic goal TO GIVE you a perspective of teaching from an instructors point of view, take the recent case of a beginner who decid- ed to take a series of three lessons to prepare for a com- pany golf tournament about a week away. By Jason Paukkunnen Contributing Writer Every pro teaching will recog- nize this scenario. On his own, the player would have been in for a very long, and frustrating, day on the course. Players in his group would offer a number of sugges- tions to help him keep up for the day. The golf course is not the place to iiprove your swing — it's the JASON PAUKKUNEN place to test your swing. For exam- ple, once you hit a shot with your driver it may be 20 minutes later that it’s back in your hands again, so you won't even remember what the last swing with it felt like. You need the opportunity to hit a number of balls with the same club when trying a new method or swing. Don’t pul pressure on your first attempts. Hit 10 balls when working on a change and see if the last five are better than the first five. Then try another 10 balls again and see if you are progressing. Now you are being realistic. With repetition any new pattern will start to get com- fortable and start to become habit. To play gol! yeu need to repeat a shot. That means you learn one swing. To repeat the swing you need to start from the same position each time. With the above gentleman we started with a simple routine in set- ting up. Then we showed him how to turn his body away from the ball. When he was able to turn back to that position at impact he generated some power and decent contact. Once confident that he could control making contact after a cou- ple of practice sessions he was ready to learn more. In the second session we worked on controlling the swing path with his arms with the turning of his body producing the power. Although there were many mis- iLUBE, ONL FILTER ISPECIAL REG. We had one more session the morning of the tournament which was spent on reinforcing what he already knew plus a simple method for short shots. We didn’t turn him into a golfer in a week, but he left the session with an established routine and swing pattern that if repeated could create a solid shot. Realistically, if he hit 30% of his shots solidly that day. T would call it a success and a fun experience on the golf course.
