Recycling old ICBC files to stop: Pement MINISTER OF Transporation and Highways, Jackie Pement, _fecently announced that a pro- gram to recycle old ICBC claim files bas been suspended after a breach of security at a Lower Mainland paper recy- cling plant. “We have suspended our use of Paperboard Industries and recov- ered all files still in the contractor’s possession,” said Pement. “This is the first of a number of steps being taken to restore security of confi- dential customer information.” ICBC holds closed files under . security for at least three years and then has them destroyed through a private paper recycler, Paperboard Industries. ICBC learned recently that a number of these closed files had been provided to the movie indus- try by the paper recycler, instead of being pulped and recycled accord- ing to the terms of its contract with the public insurance company. Film-makers had been using the old files for props in office scenes. ICBC’s contract with Paperboard Induskies stipulates high security handling of files due for destruction because they con- tain confidential information. “ICBC’s contract stipulates that all material due for recycling be handled only by bonded employees, moved only in enclosed trucks or containers, stored only in indoor facilities with security systems and baled for recycling the same way it is picked up from our own secure records retention warehouse,” said Pement.
