Absolut Fluevog absolutely

JOHN FLUEVOG is currently enjoying an overwhelming
amount of exposure for his designer shoes, but one form of
promotion he didn’t expect was through a request from the
famous Absolut Vodka liquor firm to design a special shoe.

Absolut is well known for its
full-page ads in international
publications including Interview,
Rolling Stone, Vogue, Paper (a
hot avant garde New York maga-
zine) and Flare which feature a
takeoff on a famous artist, city or
designer with a caption such
“Absolut Warhol,’ ‘Absolut
Miami,’’ ‘‘Absolut Merlet’’ or
“Absolut Spinazzola’’.

The company has arranged for
its next ad to read ‘Absolut
Fluevog”’ beneath the new avant
garde shoe which features a bent
and contorted Absolut Vodka
bottle as its heel.

The thick, heavy heel is sup-
ported by a platform sole, and
closed-toe sandal, created in silver
leather with a large front T-strap
featuring the Fluevog logo crown
at its tip.

The bottle heel,
molded in clear, solid : lucite,
features the Absolut tabei, cap
and even bubbles to produce a
convincing vodka bottle when
photographed for the ad. We
aren’t allowed to publish a photo,

but the shoe is unbelievable.

Fluevog states that the intent of
the latest Absolut campaign was
to choose a shoe designer who was
known to be totally off-the-wall
and could create such an unor-
thodox shoe.

He is proud to be included
among world renowned names
like Andy Warhol who have been
represented in the vodka ads.

Absolut Fluevogs will first be
featured in Flare and then may
appear in Interview and Paper.

Though only one pair of shoes
was made from the design and it
is Absolut’s property, Fluevog is
considering making a limited run
of the style to sell as collectors’
items through his stores in Seattle,
Boston, New York, Toronto and
Vancouver.

Vancouver designer Dana
Cleland cuts career short

VANCOUVER DESIGNER
Dana Cleland is completing
her last collection for fali
°93 and has decided to close
her nine-year-old company.

Though her business is not fi-
nancially unstable, her decision is
based on the struggling economic
conditions which she has endured
as a new designer and the dif-
ficulty she faces in competing with
larger firms in keeping he7z costs
down.

She would also like to spend
more time with her family since
she is now pregnant with her se-
cond child.

Cleland says that although she
doesn’t plan to give up her design
career permanently, she will never
go back to wholesale, and will not
be working in any capacity for at
Jeast a year and a half.

Cleland has become one of
Vancouver's most well-respected
up-and-coming labels due to
exposure through Women's Wear
Daily, Flare magazine, Style and
other national and international
publications, and has won several
awards recognizing her talent.

She is best known for her fitted
and finely detailed iittle suits
which she describes as ‘‘classics
with an unconventional. twist.”
Her line is currently available in
boutiques across Canada and will
continue for fall °93.
