Collins go to right
the ancient wrongs?

Dear Editor:

If Doug Collins truly believes
immigration to be so pernicious
an evil (‘Schools mirror future
social mess,"? March 10), he will
no doubt be eager to right: the
wrangs committed by his
forebears and reverse his own
family’s immigration into North
America.

I wish him bon voyage and
safe and speedy journey back to
his ancestors’ country of origin.

Of course, choosing that coun-
try of origin may be difficult.
judge by his Anglo-Saxon name,
his kinfolks’ latest point of depar-
ture was probably England, so he
could start there,

But the Angles and Saxons
migrated (o Britain only recently
— well within the last couple of
thousand years.

Before that they were in Ger-
many, and before that somewhere
in eastern Europe or Asia Minor,
and before that, well, probably
northern India, and before that ...
where?

How far

back is Collins

prepared to go in righting this
pattern) of persistent ancient
wrongs?

Migration has been a fact of the
human family's existence
throughout history.

Ef he really wants to do his part
to strike a symbolic blow against
immigration and its attendant
miseries (cultural change, the
growth of language, the spread of
civilization), he will have to follaw
humankind back to its root
somewhere in castern Africa, there
to seek the wilderness and jettison
the foul trappings of a thousand
millennia of migration and strug-
gle, mixing and mingling.

immigration: my own, and other
people's,

I will stay here in Canada and
work to maintain a society based
on the values of compassion,
justice, understanding and = com-
mon humanity.

Your publication of the
salaries and benefits package of
the West Van teachers was very
informative, but we have
nothing to compare it to, really.

West Van? Seattle is offen com-
pared to Vancouver because they
are of almost identical size.
