GETTING THE MOST OUT OF BEDDING PLANTS

Here area fewtips that should save you time and money, and probably result ina much
improved show of colour this summer.

1. Choose only strong, vigorous plants. If you are unsure, compare 2 or 3 sources.
Small plants may be severly set back or damp of if set out prematurely.

2. Check your sun or shade locations, and verify plant preferences with your nursery
person.

3. Poor soil produces noor results. A couple of bags of mushroom manure worked into
the soilis neveramiss. Bedding areas should be thoroughly cultivated and kept that way.
4. The two greatest enemies of bedding plants are insects and fungus diseases. The
former are easily controlled by a number of good products, the best and simplest to
apply of which are probably the new ready-to-use insecticides ina plastic, trigger spray
container. The latter can be effectively contained by applying a good quality fungicide
in powder form at the time of planting.

5. A first quality fertilizer is essential for goed results, and for flowers and vegetables
this should be 4-10-10 (8-20-20 is double strength) or the all purpose 6-8-6.

6. For continuous blooming, take the time to pinch off withering blooms before they get
a chance to produce seeds.
