CounterAttack

JUST AS sure as Santa
magically appears in every
shopping mall to herald the
arrival of the Christmas
season, police roadchecks
will spring up all over B.C.
to signal the = start of
Christmas CounterAttack,
B.C.’s annual blitz against
drinking drivers.

CounterAttack starts tomorrow
and continues through Jan. 3.
This year, officers have received
an early Christmas present — new
Walkman-sized Roadside Screen-
ing Devices which act as hand-
held breathalyzer units.

The test is simple. Motorists
blow into a disposable plastic tube
and if there’s alcohol in their
system, green, amber or red iights
will go on.

Green or amber indicate that
the driver is below the legal limit.
Amber and red on together means
that they’re close enough to the
legal limit to merit a 24-hour
licence suspension.

A single red light is the signal
for the officer to read them their
rights and demand a breathalyzer
test at the police station.

CounterAutack road checks are
a visible reminder of the effort
police are prepared to put into
getting drinking drivers off the
road. Officers will be out at all
hours of the day and in all kinds
of weather, but especially in the
most dangerous period between 9
