WV Council backs seniors, family housing WEST VANCOUVER District Council decided Monday night to try to speed up negotiations with North Vancouver District Council in order to make way for the development of an affordable seniors anc family housing project designed for Klahanie Park. Maureen Curtis Contributing Writer The West Vancouver property just east of the Capilano River and north of Earl’s Restaurant is accessible only through North Vancouver District. North Vancouver Mayor Marilyn Baker had previously re- quested that the public hearing on the Klahanie Park issue be adjourned to Dec. 10 to allow the two municipalities to complete negotiations over servic- ing of the development. But unwilling to leave the final decision to a future council, West Vancouver aldermen agreed only to adjourn the mecting to Nov. 26. “A new council may decide to re-hear the entire matter again, and that we don’t want to do,’’ said Ald. Mark Sager. The proposal had previously come before council a year ago, but became bogged down over the issue of whether family housing would be included in the project. The proposal was subsequently vetoed by North Vancouver District. But after having recently turned down the seniors project proposed by the West Vancouver Baptist Church for the British Properties area, West Vancouver Council began to fook favorably again at the Klahanie scheme to provide much needed affordable seniors housing in the municipality. Negotiations with North Van- couver District had progressed, but West Vancouver Council was reluctant to delay the matter much longer. “1 won't be here next year, and 1 intend to have this finished be- NVD wants joint meeting “THERE IS no point in talking with the servants when the masters will decide.”’ So said North Vancouver District Mayor Marilyn Baker and North Vancouver District Council after considering a request from West Vancouver District planning staff to appear as a delegation at the next North Vancouver District Council meeting to present infor- mation on the proposed develop- ment of an assisted housing pro- ject in the Klahanie Park area. The debate between the councils is over the costs of developing the Klahanie Park site and the subse- quent need to re-route Glenaire Drive and Curling Road. Pat Boname = suggested staff tell North Vancouver District that West Vancouver Council will adjust its schedule for talks if North Vancouver will do the same. Neighborhood concerns over the project include increased density and traffic, fack of school and public transport to and from the site, the possibility of building an access road through Klahanie Park, flood potential and drainage.
