16 — Wednesday, November 16, 1988 - North Shore News MAILBOX Winter club proposal slammed Dear Editor: I am writing about the proposed development of the North Shore Winter Club site at East Keith Road and Mountain. | am a homeowner in this immediate area. It upsets me to read in the North Shere News how supporters of this development outnumbered dissenters by three to one. It scares me that the supporters of the pro- posal who were mentioned had one thing in common. They were not residents of the immediately-af- fected area. They were not the homeowners who would be seriously affected by this development. I also think it would be safe to assume they were not the people who sit in the backed-up traffic every morning Other candidates worthy of support Dear Editor: Glancing through the Nov. 13 edition of your newspaper I had a warm feeling of gratitude for the abundance of well-qualified resi- dents who have volunteered their time to stand as aldermanic can- didates in next Saturday’s municipal election. 1 then observed the sign erected at the southwest edge of the Lions Gate Bridge where the Citizens for Good Government (the old West Van Electors Association?) ar- bitrarily decided that only six of the 10 have been sanitized for our protection and, ergo, are worthy of community support. That the CGG failed to endorse West Vancouver’s Citizen of the Year for 1987, James MacCarthy, should tell voters all they need to know about Canada’s grey ghosts and their continuing effort to ma- nipulate municipal politics. Quite apart from the embar- rassment that this must have caus- ed to those who were anointed, what about the considerable abili- ties of incumbent Pat Boname and newcomer (to West Van _ politics) Barrie Clark, to mention just two. Any other communiiy would be proud to have as candidates those Tejected by the CGG, and voters would be wise to remember this Nov. 19. F.A. Keate West Vancouver John Pozer. The City of North Vancouver is on record as opposing the development, the North Vancouver District planning department ex- presses fears over the proposal. Everyone is completely aware of the horrendous traffic congestion presently at this corner. Now this proposal is presented, which can only make it incredibly worse. And why? Because the North Shore Winter Club is in financial trouble? Since when is it the job of the district to approve radical changes such as this in order to bail out a private business? Why should the residents of the area pay to keep the North Shore Winter Club solvent? This proposal intends to change my home environment, my taxes, my community plan — listen to me and the others who live there or who deal with that traffic each morning ... these are the ones whose voices need to be heeded.
