Living in the same area of West Vancouver as native Bryan Adams, the two have met only briefly ata dinner in New York. Mention of the often-repeated catchphrase WAITING FOR success in the United States is West Janz. With more important things in life than success in the music in- dustry, Janz is not losing any sleep over his future. But as singing and songwriting ‘‘is something you can do until you're 50, | don’t see quitting it until I have to.” ‘Paul Janz is the next Bryan Adams’ brings a tolerant smile. Janz has heard it before. ‘tA lot of those comparisons are not musical comparisons,** he believes. ‘*Maybe it’s a confidence that | can make it and do it really big.** Growing up in strict surroun- dings where rock music was taboo and records were not allowed in the house, former opera/gospecl singer Janz turned to rock after he heard The Beatles’ Abbey Road, which for him had ‘just something init.’ For his first album, the 1985 telease High Strung, Janz won a Juno Award for the most promis- ing male vocalist. Released in Canada and the U.S. in May, his album Electricity is on its way to cracking the clusive south-of-the- border market, something few Ca- nadians manage to do. Involved daily with the album's progress in the States, he has per- sonally telephoned radio station program directors there to thank them for giving the album play. Busy writing material for himself and others, the man behind jingles for Chevrolet, Coke and Expo 86 among others last October centred his attentions on a project for the Make A Wish Foundation, an organization gran- ting wishes to terminally ill children. The tune Some Hearts Reach High, co-written with his wife, Elizabeth, and recorded with a who's who of the Vancouver music scene, was the result. “{ feel I have a responsibility to be involved in the community,”* is his motivation behind that and other charitable projects. ‘‘Things like that...are responsibilities that come with people putting you in the public eye.”’ Rising daily at 8 a.m., he goes without breakfast and works in his home studio until mid-afternoon. Topping his list of songwriting hurdles is the last 10 per cent, the last push to hit status. For the times when he is not working, his own record collection is a mix of classical and contemporary, in- cluding a fair bit of Elton John and INXS.
