10 — Wednesday, August 3 . 1988 - Capilano Chronicle me NEWS photo Terry Peters THIS WARNING sign was spotted on. Delbrook Avenue near Donegal Place. It would scem that a local resident has come up with his own way of expressing his feelings about speeders. Beat the heat From page 6 it down. Bring it in to a cooler en- vironment and wrap it in a wet towel. Take the pet to the veterinarian or animal emergency clinic right away, where anti-shock therapy and an intravenous drip may be applied. Slugbait is commonly used dur- ing the gardening season, but few people realize that dogs are at- tracted to the product and that on- ly 3-4 oz. can have a devastating effect on the average dog. Danger signs include lethargy, possible vomiting and foaming, increased respiration and tremors and sometimes convulsions and stiffness. Dogs can even become asphyxiated if their breathing is too erratic, Cats are less likely to get into slugbait, but when they do, lack of coordination, sedation and rapid eye movement are some of the symptoms of consumption. An animal should be taken to the veterinarian as soon as possible where vomiting is induced. More serious cases may require an in- travenous catheter and sedation. Most animals can be treated successfully, although serious damage to major organs and even death are certainly possible. Dr. Gilbert would prefer that gardeners combat slugs with a salt shaker or a tray of beer. “The beer is harmless to pets, works well (slugs drown in it) and there’s usually part of a bottle left for you to enjoy,’’ says Gilbert. Another hazard year-round to pets is anti-freeze, which in sum- mer can overflow out of your car, attracting animals to their deaths with a sweet smell. ee Local service stations also have advice to offer for people going on a driving holiday. Most important, says Norm MacLeod of Capilano Texaco, is ‘to ‘tmake sure you've got a lot of coolant’? — not just plain water, as a mixture of 50/50 anti-freeze and water will provide a higher boiling temperature in the radiator. os Highland Chevron’s Glen Osborne agreed, also pointing out that hoses ‘‘just love to blow in hot weather’? — so make. sure they’re not cracked or worn. If a hese blows and the driver keeps going, he says that many of ‘to- day’s aluminum. engines can become seriously warped from the heat, resulting in major repair bills. Mike Gibbons, service manager and previous owner of the Village Texaco, says the cooling system should be pressure-tested for leaks and that hoses and belts should be replaced if they ‘look doubtful or are over four years old.”’ ; He adds that the engine oil should be changed and tires in- flated before starting out on a trip. Gibbons also notes that it is best not to hang anything, such as bicycles, in front of the radiator grill as it cuts down on air circula- tion within the cooling system.
