8 - Wednesday, April 8, 1987 - North Shore News Mailbox — TEACHERS’ PAY High grades given for Collins’ column Dear Editor: I do not generally agree with Doug Collins but full marks regarding his recent remarks about teachers and their pay demands. I hope he will return to the subject. I would have thought that the average pay of the taxpayers who support them is substantially less than their average pay, which they appear to find inadequate. And I feel that it is likely that there are large numbers of tax- payers with equal education and responsibilities in other lines of work who are getting less than they are — and putting in more hours of equally onerous work per year to get it. Further, in view of the state of the provincial economy at this time and the total amount of money re- alistically available for education, their complaints about class size and the number of unemployed teachers would be more acceptable if they would forget about pay in- creases. All in all their naked greed is disgusting and they are a disap- pointing bunch to be setting an ex- ample to our children. J.F. Lawrence North Vancouver North Van library thanks borrowers Dear Editor: : . North Vancouver District Public Library would like to thank all those borrowers who made 1986 the busiest year ever. Loans were up by 17 per cent over 1985 and queries by 34 per cent. The increase in circulation at the Capilano branch of over 64 per cent can be explained by the fact that during most of 1985, the col- lection was housed in temporary quarters while a new building was constructed, causing a large drop in usage. However, even compared with 1984, the last year in the old branch, the increase in {986 is almost 38 per cent. With such popularity, in a space designed to hold an ever expanding collection, it may seem that the shelves are empty, but we want to assure our devoted patrons that there will always be more new books. Seycove branch, housed in Seycove Community School re- corded a 2.45 per cent increase in circulation despite crowded condi- tions. The summer children’s reading program, Passport to Reading, with an Expo theme, attracted almost 1,000 children who took out over 26,000 books in the month of July alone. New in the library for 1987 are an expanded audio-visual collec- tion of records, spoken-word cassettes and videocassettes; in the reference department, a citizenship file with up-to-date political, gov- ernmental and citizenship informa- tion for use by students and pro- spective new citizens; and at the Lynn Valley branch only, the complete collection of Dial-a-Law scripts, prepared by the Canadian Bar Association, giving basic legal information on topics from divorce to tenants’ rights. And please remember, the Lynn Valley branch is now open Mon- day through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. : North Vancouver District Public Library Closing Out Sale! up to OFF We are closing our boutique.
