o ‘Premier Bill Bennett has decided to call it a

» day. After 11 years at the helm of the British

-Columbian ship, sailing through some pretty
‘rough. waters, Bennett has announced his resignation,
‘to take effect this summer.

With Expo 86. being the. pinnacle of Socred success,
Bennett has picked a surprising, but appropriate, time
to bow out of. the’ political picture, leaving a glowing ©
memory of victory behind him. .

Although Bennett received a great deal of criticism
-— as the head of any. political’ party in power does

— for cutting education and other program funding,
he was one of the few leaders. who had the guts to take
a firm stand. on‘controlling government’ spending.
Critics seem to forget that increased spending means
increased taxation.

As a strong leader, : Bennett represented B.C. well in
provincial/federal . relations. He stood his ground on
the issue of Indian land claims and was supportive of
. B.C.” s lumber industry and countervailing duties.

- Besides: Expo, some of Bennett’s achievements have
* included ‘implementing :. the SkyTrain, and increasing
