Alcohol crack-down
catches 58 to date

MORE THAN 50 drivers
have been nabbed by North
Vancouver RCMP for
drinking-driving related of-
fenses since the start of a
four-week crackdown on the
Easter Weekend.

According to Sgt. Garry
Bishoff of the detachment’s
uraffic division, $8 drivers
have so far been processed
for impaired driving charges
or had 24-hour road-side
suspensions imposed after
being checked at roadblocks.

That’s an average of more
than two drivers a day, since
the start of the crack-down

on April 20.

The North Vancouver ef-
forts are part of a
province-wide campaign to
stop drinking and driving
between the Easter and
Victoria Day long weekends,
one of three periods during
the year when the numbner
of drinking driving incidents
is higher than usual.

Police in North Vancouver
and other municipalities are
mounting frequent
roadblocks aimed at nabbing
those who mix alcohol and
driving.

for 1982, the latest available,
show that 216 people were
killed and another 6,986 in-
jured in aicohol-related
accidents.

Police say 40 per cent of
fatal accidents involve
alcohol and that the total
cost in B.C. for alcohol-
related accidents was $106
million in 1982.

More than 20,000 people
faced impaired driving
charges during the year and
that one in every three court
cases concerns drinking-
driving.
