LRB can‘t get negotiations going VICTORIA — The Labor Relations Board has set aside October 26 and 27 for a hearing into B.C. Government Employees Union (BCGEU) charges that the provincial govern- ment is not bargaining in good faith. That decision was made Monday after a meeting between the BCGEU, the Government Employee Relations Bureau and the LRB failed to get the two sides back to the bargain- ing table. Following the meeting with LRB vice-chairman Bnan Foley, the govern- ment charged that the union wanted to include pensions in collective agreements while the union said the government has set up artificial bar- riers to negotiations because of a ‘‘personal hang-up’’ about what should be discussed. The Labor Relations Board hearings late this month wiil come less than a week before the planned civil service cuts are to take place. The BCGEU has threatened to pull all its members off the job if any of the 1,600 employees slated to be fired are let go at the end of the month. Farmer fight goes to the courts VANCOUVER — The B.C. Federation of Labor has taken its attempts to win Workers Compensa- tion Board coverage for farmworkers to court. A petition filed in the B.C. Supreme Court early this week asks the court to force the WCB to include farms under its safety regulations and to force the agency to release documents relating to a previous decision not to do so. Last year the Workers Compensation Board an- nounced that it would ex- tend its coverage to agricultural operations, a decision that drew protest from farm operators. Under government pressure, the WCB backed away from the original stand and decided the safety interests of the farm workers could be better protected by the formation of a committee. The committee would deal with worker safety issues but the workers would not be eligible for WCB coverage.
