Sen ee) Pa eels oo : N 7 : TERRY YORATH and his family liked the West Coast. ‘They, lived in West Vancouver, enjoyed the schools, and the lifestyle. Yet because Terry Yorath had pride in himself, he chose to return to Britain, to get away from the whinings and braying of the donkeys that plagued his short two years as Captain of the Vancouver Whitecaps. Yorath, who ._wrote a column for the News, was never popular with the fans of Vancouver. For some reason they seemed to take great delight in castigating this professional who continued to draw raves and admiration from his op- ponents. Game after game, the barking of dogs and braying of donkeys erupted from the moment Yorath was in- troduced and every time he came near the ball. And like sheep, they would all join together for their simple pleasures. It was something which shocked many of the visiting teams and players. Ron Atkinson, manager of Manchester United gave Yorath much of the credit for the Whitecaps defeat of the famous ‘Red Devils’ last season. But for Atkinson, the dogged, grind it out play of Yorath, plus_ his leadership, was nothing new. ‘He plays that way all the time’ he said with grudging admiration. And about the . constant jeering of the crowd, Atkinson was rather succint... but unprintable. Another fan of Yorath’s was Paul Power the captain of Manchester City. ‘Any team that has Terry Yorath is fortunate. He's such a ¥ tremendous leader who never quits’. Mind you, it’s all academic isn’t it? Those nits who -have to attempt to decry and destroy someone in order to imagine they are raising their own miserable lot will know that guys like Atkinson and Power don’t really know that much anyway. They will feel that they have managed to rid the Whitecaps of the 59 times Welsh International. And they will be right. Yorath ' never criticized those particular fans. But it did hurt. After 18 years as a top ranked professional, it isn’t easy to have to put up with the kind of stupid abuse he found in Vancouver. Especially when it wasn’t deserved. A wise person, Yorath has ‘reached the stage where Former athlete dies A former North: Van- couver High School athlete who played three seasons with the Calgary Stam- peders. There is no excuse for such blunders except to say that once upon a long time ago I knew someone named Nobby Clark. I goofed, terribly. When Nobby returns to his new North Shore home in the new year, he will probably aerate my body with his soccer shoes. Deservedly. Maybe, just maybe things will, be better in ’83.
